Discover the Timeless Beauty of Spencer Estate Gardens This late 18th-century house is set within a stunning serpentine park, originally advised upon by the renowned landscape architect Capability Brown around 1786. While Brown passed away before his plans were fully realized, his assistant Samuel Lapidge and son-in-law Henry Holland carried out the vision, giving the park its graceful, flowing design. The formal, balustraded gardens near the house were added in the 1860s by W. M. Teulon, and more recently, acclaimed garden designer Dan Pearson has overseen a thoughtful redevelopment. His work lifts visitors’ eyes to the wider landscape, showcasing an extraordinary collection of rare and magnificent trees. The serene lake, known as The Round Oval, was restored in 1868 and remains one of the estate’s most captivating features. A key highlight is the Summerhouse, purchased in 1901 by John Poyntz, Fifth Earl Spencer, and moved to its current position south of the Round Oval in 1926. It now stands as a poignant memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales, who was laid to rest on the island in the Round Oval in 1997—an area visited by thousands each year seeking reflection and remembrance. Visiting the area? Church Farm Lodge offers nearby bed and breakfast accommodation, perfect for those wishing to explore this extraordinary historical and natural landmark.
